Tour de Montana
$1395 * Tent Camping * July 14th – 20th, 2014 – 7 days, 6 nights
New for 2013 The Cycling House presents the Tour de Montana. Seven days and six nights of beautiful alpine riding through rural Western Montana. This will be a tent camping tour with one evening in rustic cabins. You can bring your own tent, or we will have Black Diamond tents on hand. Arrival day is July 15th. Our base for the day will be just west of Missoula, MT. We will be taking over 10 acres of land. The afternoon will bring a 25 mile spin to check bikes and get the legs ready for the trip. That evening we will dine at one of the best restaurants in Missoula Cafe’ Dolce.
We’ll start bright and early on the 16th with coffee and breakfast at 6:30am. We ride south from Missoula to Sula. 50% of the ride is on a newly constructed bike path. We travel through the Bitterroot Valley with spectacular views of the highest point in the Bitterroot, Trapper Peak. The town of Sula is a campground and convenient store. It’s the perfect first night kick off. Riders will have a creek right out the back to cool the legs. The day is almost entirely flat with minimal elevation gain. 83 miles
The 17th we begin our mountain climbing. Within the first hour of riding we’ll tackle Lost Trail Pass. The Pass is 6 miles and tops out at 7,000 feet. Believe it or not this day gets more epic. We descend into the Big Hole Valley, surrounded by four mountain ranges. There is still more climbing as Big Hole Pass awaits. Finally, we descend into the base of the Pioneer Mountains for a relaxing evening at Elkhorn Hot Springs Resort. We’ll stay in the cabins and soak in the waters. 85 miles
The 18th begins with another climb through the Pioneer Mountains. You feel like your cutting right through the range. Cars and people are a rarity as we’ll have the road to ourselves. An early morning moose crossing is common. After a big descent into Wise River, we hop on another back road towards the mining town of Anaconda. We have to climb through the Anaconda Pintler Mountains to meet our final destination. From there we tackle one more low grade pass to Georgetown Lake. This high alpine lake offers swimming and amazing vistas. 91 miles.
The 19th starts with a fun twisty downhill. It’s a flat ride through the towns of Philipsburg and Drummond. Then the climbing continues up another pass towards the small ranching community of Helmville. Back down the other side and nothing but mountains and more vistas. This time it’s the largest wilderness complex in the lower 48, the Bob Marshall. Our overnight is in Ovando. Right on the majestic Blackfoot River. 72 miles
The 20th is a 54 mile ride along the Blackfoot River back to Missoula. Lots of pullouts to dip your legs and take a brake. Once back in Missoula we’ll spend one more evening with a post camp party. Everyone will fly out on the 21st.
All meals are included in the price of $1395. Also, we will provide full ride support, luggage transportation and airport shuttles. We have our Cannondale SuperSix road bikes for rental, $195 for the week.
The Cycling House is based out of Missoula, MT and most staffers call Missoula home. We are excited to bring you our first ever Montana Road trip. The mileage and climbing will be challenging but the views are worth it. Please call or email for questions and availability.
