Tucson, AZ
Road riding in Tucson is a unique experience. The roadways have huge well maintained bike lanes- making it easy to escape into the desert and mountains beyond the city limits. Once you’ve found your way out of town the roads lanes are wide as they snake through ranches and desert lands colored in pastels. From this point one can ride for hours on rolling foothill roads or spin base miles under endless blue skies. Of course, the option to climb out of the desert and into pine forests and crisp mountain air also exists, as Tucson is bounded on three sides by mountains- providing both scenic backdrop and excellent riding terrain. The Santa Catalina Mountains tower above town to the north with Mount Lemmon (9,157 feet) standing tall at the center of the range. The climb to the top of Mt Lemmon is one of the benchmark rides in north America, with a total elevation gain of 5,500 feet over 26 miles. The grade is moderate, allowing athletes to manage their power output for training purposes, or challenge themselves at setting a record time. Other rides in the area include Cactus Forest Drive, which undulates between huge Saguaro cacti and large boulders as it passes through Saguaro National Park. The Gates Pass area (west of town) has a web of excellent roadways, including some steep climbs, and also boasts expansive views stretching in all directions.
Boulder, CO
Mountain Biking – The Boulder area provides mountain bikers with some of the most diverse terrain and scenery in the state. Singletrack dominates the trail system here too, so you won’t find yourself riding fire roads or competing with road bikes on the way to the trailhead. The foothill trails are fast and flowing, with sweeping views of the plains and Denver below. Red Lyons sandstone and granite challenge your line and ponderosa pines, cottonwoods, and gamble oak provide you with cover from the sun and the occasional thunderstorm. At higher altitudes the trails are tucked under larger pine and fir trees, but escape the shade into open meadows and aspens from time to time. If you have the lungs you can climb your way through the trees to rocky alpine trails that were once the route of gold miners and mules trains.

Road Biking – The road riding in Boulder might be even more diverse than the mountain biking. Nestled right at the foothills, Boulder provides riders with the opportunity for a long day of scenic flats, pedaling through old farms towns and country estates. Nelson road is local favorite. The drivers are friendly and the pavement is excellent. Riders can also challenge their fitness with crushing climbs to as high as 12,000 feet. Left Hand Canyon gives riders the opportunity to climb almost 4,000 feet in a cool canyon at modest grades. Other benchmark climbs include Sunshine Canyon and Flagstaff Road- both with spectacular views of Boulder, Denver and beyond. Add to that the option of riding some well maintained mountain dirt roads and you open opportunities for epic days in the saddle.
